Defence Industry Capabilities

The Greater Sydney region provides an economic contribution in Defence (2014-2015) of $4.35 billion, with over 15,000 people employed.

Prime contractors include Airbus, BAE Systems, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, Safran, and Thales Australia.

Greater Sydney Capabilities - The region hosts significant industry capabilities that support  the operational and capability needs of Defence.

These include:acoustic technologies and systems, complex system integration, cybersecurity, advanced materials and optics, helicopter and jet engine maintenance, intelligence and reconnaissance (ISR), electronic warfare (EW), space technologies and small arms manufacturing. In 2017, the Defence Innovation Network (DIN) was formed with the support of SADIG, the Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG), Defence Science Institute (DSI), the NSW Chief Scientist’s Office, and NSW Department of Industry. Industry groups and researchers from the Greater Sydney, Hunter and Illawarra Regions contribute and assist DIN to access skills and capabilities across the university network, and engage with industry specialists to prototype and commercialise on outputs from dedicated defence research projects.
